Description

Viewing large collections in lighttable is very slow. The thumbnails take a very long time to show up. Here's what another user reported on darktable-users, including a video comparing darktable with digikam on the same set of images:

https://www.mail-archive.com/darktable-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg04214.html

The problem seems to be that darktable doesn't do disk-based caching of thumbnails, so if all the thumbnails don't fit in cache to page through a large collection thumbnails need to be generated again. Here's the discussion on darktable-devel on potential ways to change the caching behavior to fix this:

http://sourceforge.net/p/darktable/mailman/message/32177216/

Basically finding a low-impact way of caching small thumbnails on disk to use in the lighttable view could potentially make it much faster.

History

A working proof-of-concept of additional on-disk caching is available here:

#2 Updated by Pedro Côrte-Real over 4 years ago

  • Affected Version changed from git development version to git stable branch
  • % Done changed from 0 to 100
  • Target version set to Candidate for next major release
  • Status changed from New to Fixed

This is fixed in current git with the new disk cache, will be in 2.0 when we release that.
