Description

I have created a group of a sequence of images and the generated output using the image sequence. The images are named IMG_0001.CR2, IMG_0002.CR2 and IMG_0003.CR2. The name of the generated image is pisti.tif. pisti.tif is the leader in the group as I want to see it in the group mode. I have hundreds of raw files in the collection. Whenever I open the aforementioned group by clicking 'G' on the thumbnail, pisti.tif is separated from the 3 raw files it is generated from. So sorting by filename does not help. I usually take a series of images and generated the output in batch, therefore sort by time does not help either.

Proposed functionality
If grouping is active in lighttable view and the 'G' is clicked in a thumbnail, then expand the group right next to the leader of the group and not in the position where the active sort by setting determines.

Fix #9739: Add sorting by group_id

This will sort images so that groups are kept together, with the group
representative being shown first, otherwise it's sorting by image id.
The details are open for discussion.

Hi Folks,

another time I want to endorse an existing feature request.
I've just migrated from Corel Aftershot to Darktable. I did use the grouping feature of Aftershot a lot. But in that app the grouped images a displayed together in the view. I does make sense to me, since all images of a group do have something in common. Otherwise they won't be grouped together. Hence, I want to see all the images of a group next to each other. It's just a way to keep overview if you have a huge image database.

Maybe one could just add another sorting item like "Sort by group" or something.
