Description

I use darktable since its version 0.9 and I am extremely satisfied with the software, but I miss an option for image interpolation in the export module, to make possible export directly from darktable for printing in large formats.

Define "image interpolation"...

Do you mean "upscaling"?

Also, what is your workflow, where do you perceive the benefit to be when upscaling yourself or having the printer upscale your image for you? Did you do any comparisons? What kind of sizes are we talking about?

(With modern camera's prints up to 30"x20" can easily be done without any real upscaling)

Yes, I am referring to upscaling. The benefit of performing the interpolation in the actual processing software is the ability to control the quality of the final result.
For the fine art market is a very important feature, especially for enlargements above 1.5 x 1.0 m.
Currently I use gimp to make these interpolations but wish I could do all my work in the darktable without relying on additional software.

Same issue here. Fine art print shops require a file that is correctly scaled to their printer (e.g. theprintspace.co.uk/theprintspace.de). As Rogerio said, scaling before printing is a matter of controlling the output.

I have the same issue, though it affects me even at normal size prints. Here is an example print house which requires exactly scaled prints.

Since we will need that for the (planned) print mode anyway it should probably be accessible for general exports, too. I do see a benefit of upscaling in dt as it can use the full float image and even allow some things like sharpening or generated extras (watermark comes to mind) after the scaling process.
