I am using Darktable, built from GIT, on a 64 bit Linux Mint system.

While testing Darktable and Rawtherapee I had noticed that Rawtherapee recovers highlights which are lost for darktable.
As far as I can understand, channels that are clipped by the white balance module cannot be recovered by the highlight recovery module.
That is plausible but a suboptimal behavior in my opinion ;)

To reproduce the issue, just download the attached NEF, apply the WhiteBalance style (Spread highlights to make it more obvious) and play around with the color temperature. Look how the sturcture of the clouds in th top right area above the house disappears on higher color temperature and comes back on lower values around 5000K. I was not able to get a result like rawtherapee gave me out of the box with blending highlight recovery and brightness/contrast adjustments.

Added another Image incl. Rawtherapee Preset. To do this manually in RT, just open the image and then turn the highlight recovery value in the exposure module to 140 and activate the blend highlight recovery in the highlight recovery module.

I'm not sure I can reproduce your problem, I don't have a screenshot from you showing the darktable issue to compare to.

There have been some changes to highlight reconstruction. With your style applied and the temperature set to 7800K it now looks like the attached image.

Could you check again please and report back?

  • % Done changed from 20 to 100
  • Status changed from Incomplete to Fixed

With git master and highlight reconstruction = lch DSC_0050.NEF looks fine in git master.
