I think Darktable should have something like LR's auto-stacking feature: http://www.tipsquirrel.com/automatically-stack-lightroom-images/
When i want to bracket shots i set my camera to burst and when i press the shutter button i get a set of closely shot photos. When i import those photos into Darktable i want to group those photos together. Darktable should have an option to auto group photos who's shooting time interval is shorter than a user-defined value, for example, 1 sec. This is only one possible use-case.

quick comment : lua now supports manipulating groups and group leaders. It can also read the exif date.
Some more exif fields might be added, but over all, I think this can be closed as "can be implemented in lua"
Grouping based on shooting time - yes.
Automatic grouping [on import] of images taken in a continuous burst - i do not think lua is needed here; it is going to be even simpler than JPG+RAW grouping.

there is a generic question about DT that should be answered here...
should DT group images at import time, and (if yes) how.
We originally answered "regroup RAW+jpg" when the feature was implemented but there was no lua support at the time. My answer, nowdays, would be that auto-grouping should be a pure lua thing because it is very use-case dependant and we don't want to clutter the UI.
