Thumbnail generation should continue in background
The new thumbnail cache is great. But it would be even better if thumbnail generation continued in the background even for images that are not currently visible on the browser. That way, I can import 5,000 images, go get a cup of coffee, and return to a browser that has already pre-cached any thumbnails I may choose to scroll to later. As it is now, unless I actually scroll down to a particular thumbnail, it will not be cached.

- Status changed from New to Triaged
- Target version set to Future
- % Done changed from 0 to 20
The new job scheduler that's currently in planning stage can help with that: just fill it up with low priority jobs for every thumbnail and be done with it. This can take some time though.

With New^2 (current) thumbnail cache you can now run
$ darktable-cli --generate-cache --core --library ./library.db
and it will generate thumbnails for all the (currently available) images in the cache.
