For another user: Support full IPTC metadata editing
I have found this enhancement request in the comments of a blog entry (on the equaliser plugin):
This comment is unrelated to this specific post, but I have a feature request.
Darktable is coming together nicely with many compelling features and alternative toning methods (as mentioned on this post and others). But as a professional photographer one of my absolute most important needs is complete IPTC metadata editing. Darktable has a few of the most-used fields available, but I use nearly every editable field in the IPTC standard as I annotate images categories, source, credits, instructions and on down to the IPTC contact info I find critical to let those who find my images find me.
Please continue developing this feature!

I have found the IPTC standards here:

I notice it is almost 4 years since the last comment on IPTC. I currently still have to use Aftershot Pro because it deals so well with adding IPTC data. Working as a professional photographer I have to be able to at least add location, country and city too, and this also has to be in the export file. ASP has the option to create several export profiles like Darktable, but within each profile it is possible to include or exclude metadata. This is good, because for publishers all metadata is required, but not for images exported to be used on the web or emailed.

I found these pages with information about possible IPTC fields. There are a lot! But not all are necessary and widely used. I think about twenty or so, max.
Most widely used fields in my opinion are (and some are already present in Darktable):
Description or Caption
Identifier or Job ID
Coverage (geografical tags)
PersonInImage (names of persons in image)
