Description

First of all I want to thanks all the people that work for improve this great piece of software. Because of this people we can do fantastic photo processing without expensive proprietary software.

Coming back to the topic. I think DT have a problem. The plugins/modules are too complicate for the normal user, there are too many parameter to set for obtain simple result.
Here I cite few example:
To set the contrast we need to manipulate a curve (Tone Curve) but most of people don't know how to do it.
There is not direct control of the saturation. To do that you have to do it through a curve (Colour Zones).

Because of that I would like to raise some suggestions with the scope to make Darktable more user friendly.
Here below some of them:

1. Add a control for contrast.

2. Add a control for saturation.

3. Add a control for Clarity and Fill Light, Highlight or lowlight
recovery (instead of use low or hight filter).

4. Simplify the White Balance plugin just leaving the parameters Temp and Tint.

5. Merge all principal plugin (Temp, Tint, Exposure, Blacks, Contrast and Saturation ) in one to make more easy find them.

6. Hide the advanced configuration of the plugin ( radius, amount, bland ....) allowing the user to show them clicking a button.

7. Darktable lack of stiles. It would be interesting to see more plugin stiles. Why don't allow the user to share them in the web site. The most downloaded can be added of default in DT.

Lightroom is a good example of a user friendly fonted, why don't we take some cue form it?

I'm interested to see what the users and developers think about these points.

7) User can export and share styles from dt. in LT on styles there are import and export buttons. Alto there is a wiki page with some styles: [[https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/darktable/wiki/DarktableStyles]]

We need a contest and a blog entry how to create/export/share styles

The styles you link are only 6. Few of them are even quite old.
I just realised that it is allow to upload styles in the page you linked. But it's not used because is not advertised.

Submitter, please break this omnibus enhancement request into separate items so we can track them more easily in both this system and in the source repo. I estimate that what you've suggested would affect 5 or 6 different modules and functional areas.

  • Status changed from New to Closed: invalid

Marking as 'closed: invalid' because this is a request for several different changes all wrapped up into one. With our distributed and disconnected development model, it is quite likely that any one of your requests would be worked on by several different people. Breaking #8653 into one issue per ticket allows us to track things more cleanly.

For instance, #8747 appears to address your item #7 (as does the wikipage).
