Description

Horizontally scrolling a gallery is a very well defined user interface task. Left/right arrows are far more common of a UI paradigm than Space/Backspace.

I'm not the only one who thinks so, this issue has been raised and mentioned time and time again, for over 8 years, and it needs to be fixed finally.

... many others

There may be a counter argument here that the keyboard mapping system may not allow a duplicate mapping, i.e., when zoomed in the left/right arrow keys should scroll the image. However, when zoomed out, that behavior should change. Left/right on a zoomed out image should cycle to the next image.

Plain and simple, guys, get on the right side of history here and make the keyboard intuitive. Make the arrow keys great again.

The workflow I am looking for here is to cycle the images quickly and press left/right and hit 1,2,3,4,5 on the keyboard to rate them quickly. I note that I can push left right on Lighttable, but not 1-5, and I can not push left/right in darktable, but I CAN push 1-5, so I get half way there in each view.

Wait, now the rating is working in LightTable (full screen) intermittedly. I can't quite figure out why sometimes it shows the rating in the upper left, and sometimes it lets me rate with the keyboard, and sometimes it doesn't.

OH, apparently if my cursor is in the UPPER HALF of the image, the rating shows and works, but if the cursor is on the LOWER half of the image, no rating is shown.

Yeah, in any case, I find the rating/keyboard system non-intuitive, and apparently I'm not the only one. Let's not make cursor position be a factor in the visibility of the ratings.

At the very least, we should have the star rating flash on the screen briefly or something when i press the 1-5 keys. I am having a difficult time with this software and it's frustrating that it was my cursor position that solved it

Shortcuts are customizable, so what you want is already possible by changing shortcuts as you want on preferences dialog, shortcuts tab.

About having ratings or not depending of the mouse, it's something I find very useful as I don't want to see them anytime. And I'm not the only one to find it useful as it is by now.

You can force the display of overlays info (stars, color labels, itc.) by enabling the overlay mode, right hand of the header bar, above the lighttable.

You can change the shortcuts if you don't like them. Not sure about the "arrows should behave this way here, and that way there" thing, since shortcuts are globally set and would need some special case handling to achieve what you ask.

The rating has been broken for some time, thank the GTK devs for us about that, because their lib changes how things work at almost every minor version and give us unacceptable overhead to fix what they broke.

Point being, this issue is still standing not because we don't care, but because GTK/Cairo is a shit stack that keeps changing its API every 2 years, and we still need to support at least the last 2-3 versions in the code to be compatible with every distro.

Hello,

please explain me, why is that simple wish sooooooooooo complicate?
If I try to change the keys from backspace and space to arrow right/left it does not work. I can change to other keys e.g. "0" and "," that works but in the arrow keys are protected :-(

I try it on Linux (Mint)/Windows 10 Pro and Mac OSX 10.xx.

If I export the shortcut to "keyboardrc" and add the Key "Left" to this line:

(gtk_accel_path "<Darktable>/views/darkroom/image back" "Left")

And reimport it, the key doesn’t work!

Thank you for the nice program but this little fact make it very uncomfortably for me.

Please help me/us und send an Example of keyboardrc that work. Actually it is buggy!

Best regards

Andy
