Description

I own a Fujifilm X100S. I used it to take a photo in both JPEG and RAW. I edited the RAW in darktable and exported it to JPEG. When I take a look at the resolution of the three files, I see the following:

original X100S JPEG: 4896 × 3264
original X100S RAW: 4992 x 3296
RAW exported to JPEG: 4936 × 3296

I don't know why the X100S JPEG and RAW have a different resolution. But certainly, the exported JPEG should have the same resolution as the RAW file, because in the lighttable the "max size" option is at its default of 0 x 0 for no scaling. I have uploaded the files in question.

Yes, that is perfectly fine.

Certainly not.

The camera sensor has some dimensions.
The raws usually contain the full sensor dump, thus they should have the same pixel count as the sensor.

BUT. Not all of the sensor pixels are usable, the border pixels are usually garbage (either completely black, or just jumbled).
Thus some crop is needed.
Camera manufacturers opted to apply one crop, we apply a different crop, which usually results in larger image than OOC JPEG.
Thus, all these three sizes may differ.

Yep, and by importing and re-exporting that JPEG you can see that it's size won't reduce further, thus that "max size" is irrelevant here.

Same issue here with a Sony a7 (ILCE-7) camera.
The original photo has a resolution of 6000x4000, the converted JPEG by darktable (2.4.0) on openSUSE Tumbleweed has a resolution of 6022x4024.
Other converters like the Sony Image Data Converter and Adobe DNG Converter use a resolution of 6000x4000.

In addition the JPEG exported by darktable differs in brightness and concavity using default settings in comparison to JPEG exports created by camera (original JPEG), Sony Image Data Converter (from ARW file) and Adobe DNG Converter (from ARW file).

The following procedure is used to export a JPEG with darktable 2.4.0:
1. rm -rf ~/.config/darktable
2. Convert ARW to JPEG with darktable using the default settings (import ARW and export JPEG)

The archive SONY_ILCE7_1.zip contains the following files (original camera files):
DSC05853_camera.ARW: Original photo from Sony camera
DSC05853_camera.JPG: Camera generated JPEG photo

The archive SONY_ILCE7_2.zip contains the following files (converted JPEG files from RAW files):
DSC05853_darktable.jpg: Darktable generated JPEG from file DSC05853_camera.ARW
- greater pixel size than original photo
- darker than original photo
- different concavity than original photo
DSC05853_Sony_Image_Data_Converter.jpg: Sony Image Data Converter generated JPEG from file DSC05853_camera.ARW
- a bit blurred in comparisation to original photo
DSC05853_thumbnail_Adobe_DNG_Converter.jpeg: Adobe DNG Converter generated full-size thumbnail JPEG (extracted from DNG file) from file DSC05853_camera.ARW
- a bit milkier than original photo
DSC05853.ARW.xmp: Created by darktable at JPEG export from ARW
IDCLabelInfo.xml: Created by Sony Image Data Converter at JPEG export from ARW

Converted ARW to DNG:
SONY_ILCE7_3_DSC05853_Adobe_DNG_Converter.dng: Converted ARW to DNG file with Adobe DNG Converter (including embedded full-size JPEG thumbnail)
