Description

Would it be practical to have a separate application that just creates/lists/searches the Darktable sidecar files by keyword so that I can index my 50,000 images without editing everyone of the images?

The application would let me add keywords and leave all other sidecar data as is. I could then search for every image labelled as "Sydney" or whatever. I will have some development time later this year. I would look at using a cross platform language so people could search across a network share from any platform and authorised people could add labels.

What I do not know is how the updating of a sidecar file would impact on Darktable?
Does darktable store anything about images outside of sidecar files?
If Darktable import found existing sidecar files, would it read them?

The data is stored in a database, too.

darktable can be configured to look for changed sidecar files on start.
