Description

Current behavior

Currently, the target of a rating in the darkroom view is the active image if the cursor is not in the filmstrip area or the image under the cursor if the cursor is in the film strip area.

Problem

At times, it may make sense to navigate using the mouse to skip over the next few images (e.g., to jump to a more interesting image, before reviewing the less interesting ones) before rating the selected image. However, if the mouse is not removed from the filmstrip area, the ratings will be applied to the image under the cursor, which usually is a few images later as the filmstrip recenters, and not the image shown.

History

It appears that this issue has been raised in the past a few times in the context of the lighttable view (#10930, #10611, #9811, #8872, #8815) where there is no single active image and is more of a batch rating interface. However, the behavior may not be ideal in the darktable view where there is one active image.

Proposal

Create a configuration option to toggle the behavior (existing/apply ratings to active image shown).

Is there any support for this functionality (i.e., merging code if provided)?

This question was asked in IRC, but the channel was quiet.
