As far as I'm aware it's highly patented, as it's derived from h265. So it's a legal hazard.

Various formats have tried to replace JPEG over the years, and they've all universally failed HARD. Mainly because JPEG is good enough for the big use-cases, so it doesn't really need replacing to begin with.

So we're probably not going to waste our time on this. If one or two years from now BPG turns out to be a huge success after all, we might reconsider.
