Description

Pentax K-3 has got feature to take shots in HDR mode. It is combining 3 shots into one. If the output is set to RAW it can save RAW files as one.
Darktable is displaying thumbnail generated from the camera properly, however when switched to EDIT mode, photo looks like "normal", nothing like the thumbnail.

K-3 RAW HDR files actually contain 3 separate RAW images bundled into 1 DNG RAW file. The only way I know of separating the images is using the 'Digital Camera Utility 5' PC software which came with the camera. I guess darktable will need to be able to read those DNG files as a set of images for HDR processing to work without resorting to an external utility. It would be a useful feature for me.

Vendor/camera specific gimmick features like this, are extremely low on our priority list. So this is unlikely to ever be implemented unless someone takes a personal interest.

And they often entail a significant maintenance burden to keep things working, while only offering a benefit to a very small subset of users.

Yes, K-3 is combining and saving 3 RAW files into one RAW. I think this would be very useful. I do not have experience with DSLRs from other makers (Nikon, Canon, Sony etc.), but I believe that each system within DSLRs will or already have like Pentax K-3 combined HDR files in RAW format. I strongly believe that this feature is very useful.

At the moment my "overide" of this "problem" in Darktable is to take HDR shot, save it inside camera as RAW and the within the camera as well save it with general settings as TIFF file and then import to Darktable. At the moment works like a charm. Of course some data is lost when saving from RAW to TIFF inside camera itself.

A while ago I played with supporting MagicLantern's raw video format directly. In order to do that I added a new field to the image struct (and db) that specifies the sub-id of an image. That could be used for this case to add the raw file 3 times but with sub-ids of 0, 1 and 2 to get access to all 3 embedded images. Or for multi page TIFFs. Or anything like that. We would however still need support for those files in rawspeed or our own code to read them and specify which image to get from the pack.

PS: The sub-id field isn't part of the regular dt code, it just lives in some branch that has been rotting a lot I guess. So, just saying.

PPS: I never saw anything like this in my Canons.

Native support for Magic Lantern MLV would be indeed very interesting, but to do anything like that right i guess we would indeed need some support from RawSpeed.
